Veri.Me provides a secure, researcher-owned and directed digital identity that enables verified access without exposing personal data.
Veri.Me is a global digital identity verification service for researchers that can be directly integrated into existing systems for access to research data and resources. It eliminates the need for research systems to collect and store sensitive personal information (PII) while also providing assurance that system access is limited to identity-verified users.
Veri.Me uses cryptographic techniques like zero-knowledge proofs for high-fidelity identity verification assurance without the need for entities to see original documents. Account access theft, tracking, and surveillance will be more difficult because authentication and identity information is no longer contained in large, centrally-owned and managed databases.
Veri.Me extends reputation-based systems like ORCID by providing a public key that verifies the identity and personhood of an account holder. It removes the need for universities and governments to collect and store sensitive identity documents.
In addition to these tangible benefits to institutions, we expect a significant benefit to researchers themselves in owning and managing the sharing of their verified digital identity.

Who We Are
The Veri.Me founding team is well-established in the research community, with decades of global experience with start-ups to Fortune 100 companies in research infrastructure, technical platforms, data privacy, and cryptographic security
Laura Paglione, MBA
Co-Founder
Laura brings expertise in software development, global research infrastructure, and federated identity management. As ORCID’s founding Technical Director, Laura launched and directed the member and user offerings for the platform that grew to serve over 5 million users within its first six years. In positions at the Kauffman Foundation, Ford Motor Company and Avid Technology, she created and executed business and technical launch plans for new ventures. Laura has an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
Laure Haak, PhD
Co-Founder
Laure brings expertise in product strategy, partnerships, governance, and start-up operations along with a global network through her work at Thomson Reuters and as the founding Executive Director of ORCID and principal of the Mighty Red Barn consultancy. Laure has a PhD in Neurosciences from Stanford University and was a postdoctoral scholar at the US National Institutes of Health.
Shady El Damaty, PhD
Advisor and Partner
Shady is founder of OpSci, CEO of Holonym, and principal in the human.tech project, a decentralized identity protocol with 2m+ users and 35.4m credentials created, on which we plan to build our code base. Shady has a PhD in Neuroscience from Georgetown University.
Our
Commitment to Open Science
-
Who We Serve
Veri.Me is an important open science tool that enables researcher mobility and broad participation. Our primary stakeholders are researchers.
-
Our Governance
Veri.Me is organized as a public benefit corporation governed by researcher-users. Users control their Veri.Me accounts, and can both verify identity and generate a public key, accessible by API, all while maintaining PII privacy.
-
Our Business Model
Our business model is based on API fees, a proportion of which will be redistributed to users.
-
Our Technology
We leverage the proven and open source Zeronym technology as Veri.Me's foundation, and in kind, make our work available under an MIT Open Source license.
